This is one of my all time favorites. Some like Salinger. Others, Rowling. For me it's a toss-up between this and The Shining by Stephen King. On a rainy afternoon, this usually wins because, well -- it's a lot smaller and shorter and it has hilarious pictures of goat-people in it.
