The Cat Gangs of Hydra Island

The Greek Islands are infested with cats. Tough, mean alleycats that you used to be able to watch do dirt in cartoons. Bad cats. Cats that know how to get food off your table. Cats that bite. This summer I got to know one of the most murderous cat gangs on the island of Hydra, the dumpster set known by the children simply as SkoupĂdimoo - which sort of means little trash.

Their leader, Cyclops.  Lost his eye in a fight with a horse.

SkoupĂdimoo at their main dump.  They kill dogs (to eat).  No mercy.
They swim too.  Come back to land with Snapper, Gruper, you name it.

Slice, the 2nd in command.  Has a taste for human flesh.  He once ate all the toes off
an old yah-yah - one of those Greek Grandmother types that dress in black.

Skata, which means poop.  This one actually smokes cigarettes.

Hatey.  I thought the kids were being racist and calling him Haiti because he was a black cat,
but they called him Hatey because everyone hates him so much because he's so smelly.
He used to be called Smelly, but it wasn't enough so now they call him Hatey.

Poo-sox and Grubs.  All they do is complain.  They have a special attack move where Poo-sox
sort of does this somersault thing and slingshots Grubs into the air  --
gunning for enemy eyeballs with her claws.

Melina, the young girl who signed this drawing is looking for her cat, Deborah.
Let's hope Deborah didn't fall in with the wrong crowd.

Did Anyone Ever Dare To Even DREAM That Drying Off Could Be This Much Fun?

Smurfmallows

Smurf Gelato with marshmallows in it.  Bubblegum flavored, natch.

Smurfmallows live in the forest.

The Smurfmallows are a really good bunch of guys.  They want you to know that they
are a completely different species than the Smurfs.  Any likeness is pure cowinkydink.

This Smurfmallow was decapitated by an evil Smurf.  They don't talk about the evil Smurfs in the
cartoons because it's bad for the franchise.  But they exist, and they're very jealous of the Smurfmallows.

Jeff and Me Went to the Beach

Keep Off The Dunes

Gayla Super Twine

for general household use

I'll buy anything that's hot-pink if it only cost 79¢.  You don't see that outside of hi-bouncers from
the candy-machines.

Finally!

They made a Water Limbo Sprinkler.  It's a about time.
Is it just me or is the kid on the box poised on the brink of becoming a mega-celebrity?
No one could have communicated water limbo like he has.

Animal Kingdom Mini-Golf

There's not much of a story here, except that Animal Kingdom is probably the best old school mini-golf course you can find in the New York Area.  Mostly untouched, it's been there in Southampton since the 60's. The miniature golf statues were sculpted nearly 50 years ago.  Now I'm gonna show you the animals.

Right there on 27.

Me and Will, the longtime owner.

This poor beaver might have a nicely sculpted butt, but he doesn't have one of those handy Beaver tails.

Skunk is a very obvious cousin of Beaver.

Skunk does have a tail though.

Abigail had a problem with the Lion.
She put her hand in his mouth, then screamed.
Then, she couldn't get her ball back.

Eventually, her family had to console her.

People In My Neighborhood: Linelle

I asked Linelle to explain to me why older women often rinse their hair to have a purple look to it.  She said sometimes when you have grey or white hair, it goes a little yellow on you.  So to counteract that yellow, ladies use a blue rinse -- to hopefully achieve silver grey or total white.  But it's hard to really get the ratio right, and instead of a blue what you often get is a violet.

But Linelle said she didn't know that until she actually got older herself.  She always thought it was a style with the ladies from her neighborhood, and she always wanted to be able to do it when her hair turned grey.  The blue rinse wasn't really enough for her, so she said she uses a little Manic Panic from the new Ricky's that opened near to her, to really make it pop.
